Women Win SIUE Gateway Invite, Men Second
Sunday, April 20 2014 - SIUE Gateway ClassicPanthers post five first place finishes at event
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Eastern Illinois women's track team picked up a first place finish on Saturday while the Panther men placed second at the SIUE Gateway Invite. EIU returns to action on Tuesday hosting the Tuesday Tweener at O'Brien Field. Select athletes will compete next weekend at the Drake Relays.
On the women's side the Panthers won with 117 points just ahead of OVC members Austin Peay and SIUE in second and third. APSU scored 107 points and SIUE had 105. Host SIUE won the men's team competition on the final event scoring 123.5 points. EIU was second with 114 points and Missouri was third with 86.
EIU posted five first place finishes with a total of 17 top three finishes including a medal in both the men's and women's 4x400 relay races.
Peter Geraghty won the men's pole vault with a mark of 18'0.50" which ties the EIU school record as he joins Mick Viken as the only two Panthers to ever clear the 18' barrier. Teammate Eric Gordon was third clearing 15'3. On the women's side three EIU athletes cleared 12'1.50 with number of attempts separating Annemarie Reid, Sadie Lovettand Lauralyn Rosenberger in places third through fifth. Reid was the third place finisher.
Kristen Paris won the women's 800m race with a time of 2:10.69. That time ranks sixth on the EIU career list. On the men's side Bryce Basting placed third in the 800m with a time of 1:55.19.
Ruth Garippo won the women's steeplechase with a time of 11:29.54. Her time ranks eighth on the EIU career list. Teammate Kelsey Hardimon placed second in the event with a time of 11:38.67.
Jalisa Paramore posted a first place finish in the women's long jump while finishing second in the women's 100m hurdles. Paramore's long jump mark was 19'8.75". She posted a time of 13.78 in the hurdles.
Mike Hesslau closed out the EIU first place finishers winning the men's 1500m run. His winning time was 3:54.16. He finished just ahead of teammate Matt Black with a second place time of 3:54.63.
Kailey James had the final women's individual top three finish in the women's high jump. She cleared 5'5" to place second. On the men's side Aviance King was second in the men's high jump with a height of 6'8.75".
David Johansson had a second place finish in the men's javelin with a mark of 196'6". Jamal Robinson was second in the men's 100m dash with a time of 10.80.
The men's 4x400 relay team was second with a time of 3:17.21. The relay squad included Ryan Ballard, Basting, Ephraim Dorsey and Brock Ramos.
The women's 4x400 relay team was third with a time of 3:49.56. The relay squad included Dhiaa Dean, Amina Jackson, Paris and Ashley Fouch.
Earlier in the week senior Pablo Ramirez competed in the men's Elite 10K race at the Mt. Sac Relays. Ramirez's 10K time was 29:52.95 as he finished 19th.
