Three Track Athletes Earn Academic All-Region

CHARLESTON, Ill. - Three Eastern Illinois track and field athletes were named to the Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-Region 5 team as Mick Viken, Jade Riebold and Britney Whitehead were all honored for their academic and athletic success.
Viken was a first team All-Region selection. He is scheduled to compete in the NCAA Outdoor National Championships on Wednesday in the pole vault after placing ninth in the NCAA West Regional. A second team All-American last year in the pole vault Viken holds a 3.30 GPA in kinesiology.
Riebold was a first team All-Region selection. She is scheduled to compete in the NCAA Outdoor National Championships in the pole vault on June 7. During the indoor season Riebold was the national runner-up in the event. She holds a 3.37 GPA in recreation administration. Last year Riebold was an All-American in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Whitehead was a second team All-Region selection with a 3.83 GPA in elementary education. Whitehead ended her career at the NCAA West Regional competing in the steeplechase. She was a first team All-OVC selection this past year in cross country, indoor and outdoor track.
Viken and Riebold will now be placed on the national ballot for COSIA Academic All-American honors. To be considered an athlete must hold a 3.30 or higher cumulative GPA, being in their second academic year of competition at an institution and be a starter or key reserve.
