EIU Finds Success At NCAA Last Chance
Sunday, March 4 2012 - Alex Wilson InvitationalSOUTH BEND, Ind. - Eastern Illinois sent a select group of track and field athletes to NCAA Last Chance meets with the Panthers appearing to have two athletes set to qualify for the NCAA National Championships in Boise, Idaho.
Jade Riebold continue to have a break out season in her first year competing for EIU. Riebold opened the week clearing 13'11" at at the North Central Last Chance meet. She then placed second at the Notre Dame Last Chance meet on Saturday with a height of 13'5". The 13'11" mark was nearly five inches over her previous school record mark. That height ranks 12th in the NCAA.
Senior Zye Boey entered the weekend ranked No. 16 in the NCAA in the 200m. Last season Boey was an All-American in the event placing seventh in the nation. Boey ran the 60m at the Notre Dame Last Chance posting a second place time of 6.69.
The NCAA Indoor National Championships includes any automatic qualifiers plus any competitors up to the top 16 in select events. The NCAA will announce its championship field later in the weekend.
On the track Megan Gingerich improved upon her school record in the 800m. Gingerich ran a time of 2:08.65 placing 12th. The time improved on her own school record in the event by a second. Erika Ramos ran a time of 2:14.46 to place 24th.
On the men's side Graham Morris competed in the 3000m finishing 10th with a time of 8:19.02. The time ranks 8th on EIU's career list.
Sophomore Mick Viken recorded his best pole vault height of the year finishing fourth in the pole vault at Notre Dame with a mark of 17'4.50". The mark was three inches better than Viken's school record mark set last year.
Bryce Hogan and Donald Romero rounded out the men's indoor competitors at the Notre Dame Last Chance. Hogan was third in the long jump with a jump of 23'6". Romero was sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 61'1.50"
