Women 1st, Men 4th At OVC Track Day One

NASHVILLE – Eastern Illinois women's track and field opened defense of its Ohio Valley Conference Indoor track title with an impressive performance.  The EIU men will have some work to do on Saturday if they hope to win a fourth straight OVC crown as day one of the 2012 OVC Indoor Track and Field Championships wrapped up at Tennessee State.

The EIU women stand in first place with 56.5 points scored through the opening five events on Friday.  Austin Peay is second with 26.5 points followed by Southeast Missouri, Tennessee State and Eastern Kentucky all tied in third place with 26 points.

The EIU men are fourth following day one action scoring 26 points in five events.  Southeast Missouri is leading the championship with 51 points followed by Eastern Kentucky with 42 points and Tennessee State in third with 33 points.

EIU did advance a number of athletes to the championship round of the sprints which will take place on Saturday at the Gentry Center.

The EIU women scored in all five finals events on Friday.  Caitlin Napoleoni earned second team All-OVC honors with a second place finish in the 5K.  Napoleoni covered the distance in 17:43.34 which ranks second on EIU's career list.  Gabriela Duenas scored points with a fourth place finish in the 5K at 18:00.62.

Alisha Donner earned second team All-OVC honors in the shot put with a second place showing and a mark of 44'10.75”.  That throw ranks eighth on the EIU career list.  Condia Smith and Melanie Thompson added point scoring performances in the shot put.  Smith placed third at 44'0.755” while Thompson was seventh at 40'6.75”.

The women's distance medley relay team comprised of Paige BiehlerEmily Quinones,Megan Gingerich and Britney Whitehead all earned second team All-OVC honors as the DMR squad placed second.  The team posted a time of 11:58.55 which ranks second on the EIU career list.

Other EIU women's competitors scoring points on Friday included Maura Cummins andTiffany Beachy in the high jump.  Jaimee Roy and Klaudia Susul scored points in the long jump.  Cummins placed third in the high jump at 5'6”.  Beachy was fifth in the high jump at 5'2.25”.  Roy had a long jump of 18'9” that placed fifth in the event.  The distance ranks seventh on the EIU career list.  Susul jumped 18'4.25” to place seventh.

On the men's side EIU had three individuals score points while the men's DMR was edged at the finish line by EKU to finish second.  The DMR squad was comprised of Matt Black, Joseph AugustineEphraim Dorsey and Graham Morris.  EKU won at 9:54.42 with EIU just behind at 9:54.86.  That time ranks fourth on the EIU career list.

Bryce Hogan and Danny Harris each scored points for the Panthers in the long jump.  Hogan earned second team All-OVC honors by placing second in the event.  Hogan cleared 24'1”.  That jump ranks sixth on the EIU career list.  Harris placed fourth with a jump of 22'11.75”.

Donald Romero was third in the shot put with a throw of 54'0.50”.  That distance ranks eighth on the EIU career list.
