Track Opens 2015-16 Indoor Season

EIU indoor track & field begins 2015-16 season hosting Early Bird Meet this Friday
The Eastern Illinois University men's & women's track & field teams will begin their 2015-16 indoor season as they begin the year with their annual pre-holiday Early Bird Meet hosted inside the Lantz Field House. The Early Bird Meet is slated to begin at 2 p.m. this Friday (Dec. 11).
HIGH EXPECTATIONS
Both the EIU men's & women's indoor track & field teams enter the 2015-16 with high expectations. Combined, the two squads return 11 total All-OVC members. The men return first-team members Riley McInerney (mile run and final leg in the distance medley relay), Derek Williamson (first leg in the 4x400- meter relay), Calvin Edwards (third leg in the 4x400- meter relay), and Joe Calio (first leg in the distance medley relay). Johnathan Boey (60-meter dash) and John Piper (60-meter hurdles) return for the Panthers as second-team members.
The women return Bryn Buckwalter (shot put) and Haleigh Knapp (high jump) as All-OVC First-Team members.Angelica Anyaogu (60-meter dash and long jump), Dhiaa Dean (400-meter dash), and Jackie Jones (high jump) enter the year following second-team honors a season ago.
The Eastern Illinois women's indoor track & field team captured the OVC Indoor Championship Title, while the men earned a second place finish in the conference championship.
EIU's director of track & field, Tom Akers, was named as the Women's OVC Coach of the Year and Co-Men's OVC Coach of the Year with SEMO's Eric Crumpecker for the 2014-15 indoor track & field season.
ABOUT THE EARLY BIRD MEET
The field events are scheduled to begin at the 2 p.m. start. The field events for the Early Bird Meet include weight throw, shot put, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, and high jump.
The running events are scheduled to begin at approximately 4 p.m. The running events will include the 60-M hurdles, 60-M dash, mile, 400-M dash, 600-M dash, 800-M run, 200-M dash, 3K run, distance medley, and conclude with the 4x400-M relays.
The other teams participating in the Early Bird Meet include Illinois State, Western Illinois, Southeast Missouri, SIU-Edwardsville, and Butler. Illinois will participate in the meet, but only will be represented by their women's track & field team.
The Early Bird Meet will be scored as a double-dual meet.
FOLLOWING THE EARLY BIRD MEET
Following the Early Bird Meet, the EIU men's & women's indoor track & field teams will be back in action on January 16 at Illinois.
