Track Wins Nine Medals On OVC Day One

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Illinois track and field opened competition in the 2015 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track Championships on Friday with the Panthers posting nine medal winning performances on the opening day.
The meet was delayed late Friday night forcing a combined running of the men's and women's 10K. Two field events – the women's pole vault and women's javelin - were postponed until Saturday as well.
On the women's side Haleigh Knapp and Janie Howse both had top three field event finishes. Knapp was second in the women's high jump clearing a height of 5'7". Howse was third in the discus with a throw of 148'5".
Riley McInerney had an early third place finish for the Panthers in the men's steeplechase finishing with a time of 9:21.52.
In field events David Johansson was second in the javelin with a season best throw of 207'. EIU placed second and third in both the pole vault and discus. In the pole vault Eric Gordon was second with a height of 15'11" while Elliott Krause was third with a height of 14'5.25". Garrett Jensen was second in the discus with a throw of 152'1". Michael Jean placed third with a throw of 147'8". Kendall Williams rounded out the day one medal winners with a third place in the long jump. Williams bronze medal mark was 24'6.25"
The OVC Track Championships will continue on Saturday at Austin Peay. EIU is in second place on both the men's and women's sides after day one. Southeast Missouri led the men's point total with 75 points followed by Eastern Illinos (69.5), SIUE (53.5), Eastern Kentucky (42), Belmont (19), Tennessee State (9) and Morehead State (3). On the women's side, the SEMO earned 38.5 points followed by Eastern Illinois and Murray State with 32 points. Tennessee State is third with 31.5 points followed by Eastern Kentucky (31), Austin Peay (10), SIUE (9), Morehead State (1) and Jacksonville State (1)
