EIU Men Win OVC Outdoor Track Title

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Illinois men's track had six first place finishes including two Ohio Valley Conference record setting performances as the Panther men won the 2015 OVC Outdoor Track Championship on Saturday afternoon.  The women finished second by 1.5 points in a tightly contested championship won by Tennessee State.

The EIU men finished with 233.5 points.  Southeast Missouri was second with 216 points followed by SIU Edwardsville in third with 141.5.  The title is EIU's 15th men's outdoor championship since joining the league. 

On the women's side EIU had the title within its grasp but failed to score points with a DNF in one of the relays.  TSU won the title with 128.5 points.  EIU was second with 127.  Host Austin Peay was third with 119 points.

Ephraim Dorsey was one of the Panthers first place finishers as he won the 800m run setting the OVC record with a time of 1:48.15.  That mark is the second best in school history trailing only Jim Maton.  Dorsey later ran on the first place 4x400 relay team that won with a time of 3:13.19.  That squad included Calvin EdwardsDerek Williamson, Dorsey and Norvel Mohammed.

Mohammed had perhaps the biggest day for any EIU athlete walking away with four gold medals.  He won the 200m with a time of 20.85.  He was first in the 400m with a time of 46.92.  He ran the anchor on the first place 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams.  The 4x100 relay squad tied the EIU school record set twice this season with a time of 39.79 which set an OVC record for the event.  The relay team included Johnathan Boey, Edwards, Jamal Robinson and Mohammed.

Danny Trevor had the final first place finish for the EIU men winning the 400m hurdles for the second straight year.  He won with a time of 52.61.  Trevor was second in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.72.

Annemarie Reid posted the only first place finish on Saturday for the EIU women as she and teammate Sadie Lovett were the top two finishers in the pole vault which was carried over from Friday due to weather.  Reid won with a height 12'6.25".  Lovett cleared 11'9". 

Amina Jackson was second in the women's 400m hurdles with a time of 1:01.36.  Dhiaa Dean and Kristen Paris posted third place finishes in running events.  Dhiaa was third in the 400m with a time of 54.65.  Paris was third in the 1500m with a time of 4:32.80.

Jackson, Paris and Dean were three of the four members on the third place women's 4x400m relay team that finished with a time of 3:48.05.  Darneisha Spann ran the second leg on the relay.

Bryn Buckwalter capped the EIU women's top three finishers with a third place mark in the shot put.  Buckwalter had a throw of 46'4.25"

On the men's side Riley McInerney had a second place finish in the 1500m run with a time of 3:50.13.  Johnathan Boey and Christian Ilunga-Matthiesen placed second and third in the men's 100m dash.  Boey had a time of 10.57 while Ilunga-Matthiesen crossed the line at 10.60.

Edwards had a pair of top three finishes in sprints.  He was second in the 400m with a time of 47.29.  He was third in the 200m with a time of 21.17.

Eric Gordon added a second silver medal for the weekend on Saturday as he was second in the decathlon scoring 6,034 points.  Gordon was second in the men's pole vault on Friday night.

EIU will return to action in two weeks with athletes that have qualified competing in the NCAA West Regional in Austin, Texas.
