Track Returns To Action At WIU Lee Calhoun

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois track and field returns to action this weekend with competition at the Western Illinois Lee Calhoun Memorial Meet.  The hammer throw will take place on Friday afternoon with the remaining meet schedule set for Saturday.  Field events begin at 9 a.m. with the javelin.  Running events are slated for a 11:30 a.m. start
 
EIU is coming off a strong finish at the EIU Big Blue Classic last weekend at O'Brien Field.  The Panthers finished third in both the men's and women's meet with seven first place finishes.
 
Sprinter Norvel Mohammed was named the OVC Male Track Athlete of the Week after winning both the 100m and 200m dash.  His time in the 100m of 10.54 ranks tenth on the EIU career list.  His winning time in the 200m of 20.60 ranks second on the EIU career list and places him ninth in the NCAA this season.  Mohammed closed the anchor leg on the 4x100 relay team that placed second with a time of 40.53, the sixth best time in school history.
 
Ephraim Dorsey turned in a personal best in the 800m run winning the event last weekend with a time of 1:51.29.  Derrick Johnson won the men's 10K with a time of 31:19.24.
 
On the women's side Kristen Paris won the 800m run with a time of 2:12.04.    Ruth Garippo was third in the steeplechase with her time of 11:08.05 landing in sixth on the EIU career list.    EIU posted two top ten career times in the 10K as Whitney Maninfior and Victoria Quarton had times that placed seventh and eighth on the Panthers charts.
 
In throws Bryn Buckwalter posted two EIU career top ten marks in the shot put and hammer.
 
The WIU Lee Calhoun is scheduled to have athletes from 25 schools competing.
