Track Makes It Three Straight OVC Outdoor Titles

MURRAY, Ky. - Make it three straight outdoor titles and six straight track crowns total as Eastern Illinois swept the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference outdoor track and field championships on Saturday at Murray State. The EIU men cruised to a comfortable 86 point win while the women walked home with a four point difference in their title defense.
Eastern Illinois scored 266 points on the men's side with Southeast Missouri second with 180 and Eastern Kentucky third at 92. On the women's side EIU scored 185 points to hold off SEMO at 181 with EKU third with 136.
The EIU men posted seven individual first place finishes on Saturday including two by Darren Patterson in the 200m and 400m. Patterson also ran a leg on both the 4x100 and 4x400 championship relay teams. Patterson was named the co-Athlete of the Championships while head coach Tom Akers was named the Coach of the Year for both the men and women
Abigail Schmitz was the lone women's team member to win an individual title on Saturday but EIU showed enough balance that they were able to win the title despite not scoring the final event of the day. Schmitz won the pole vault with a height of 12'1.50" which was a quarter inch better than her school record mark set last weekend.
Patterson led a dominant performance by the EIU men as he won the 200m with a time of 21.12 and the 400m in a time of 46.97. He would run the opening leg of the 4x100 relay which won with a time of 40.85 joining Jacob Mitchell, Tyler Carter and Kaleel Johnson. On the 4x400 relay team he ran the second leg as the Panthers won in a time of 3:16.23. Cody Boarman ran the opening leg followed by Patterson, Preston Smith and Pat Tortorici.
Tortorici and Smith would finish first and second in the 400m hurdles as the Panthers took home the top four spots. Tortorici won in a time of 51.95 which ranks 7th best on the EIU career list. Smith crossed in a time of 52.56. Kris Gehrke was third and Chad Aubin fourth.
Mick Viken led a Panthers sweep across the medal stand in the pole vault as the OVC Freshman of the Year tied the OVC record clearing 17'1.50" to win gold. Viken tied the record held by Murray State's Dareen Pahl in 1985. Scott Mammoser was second at 16'4.75" andJoe Noonan was third at 15'9". Mammoser's vault was 6th on the EIU career list. Mammoser also placed third in the javelin with a throw of 155'3".
The Panther men also took home gold and silver in the 800m and 110m hurdles with EIU taking the top two spots in each event. Ryan Ballard won the 800m with a time of 1:54.57 withReid Basting second at 1:55.64. Dominique Hall won the 110m hurdles with a mark of 14.36 with Lamarr Pottinger second at 14.61.
Tyler Allen rounded out the individual first place winners for EIU placing first in the triple jump. Allen had a distance of 47'6.50". Teammate Bryce Hogan was third in the event with a jump of 46'0.75".
Bridget Sanchez and Erika Ramos both picked up a pair of medals for the EIU women as they won the title with a balanced team effort. Both runners posted top three finishes that also landed on the EIU career top ten.
Sanchez was third in the 400m dash with a time of 54.98. She then ran the second leg on the 4x100 relay team that placed second with a time of 46.82. That time ranks eighth on the EIU career list as Sanchez was joined by Emily Quinones, Jaida Moore and Klaudia Susul.
Ramos placed third in the 800m run with a time of 2:12.63 as that time ranks seventh on the EIU career list. Teammate Megan Gingerich was the silver medalist in the event finishing at 2:11.18. Ramos would earn a second bronze medal with a third place effort in the 1500m crossing the finish in 4:42.43.
Two other women's team members posted marks that landed in the EIU career top ten as they placed in the top three in their respective events. Dominique Turner was third in the hammer with a throw of 151'5". That mark is sixth at EIU. Jalisa Paramore was third in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.58. That time in the hurdles is eighth at EIU.
Queenie Adeboyejo and Olivia Klaus rounded out the top three finishers for the EIU women. Adeboyejo was second in the triple jump clearing 39'2.25". Klaus was third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:03.26. On Friday afternoon Klaus placed first in the steeplechase.
Graham Morris, Jacob Mitchell and Kaleel Johnson rounded out the top three track event finishers for the EIU men. Morris placed third in the 1500m with a time of 3:54.42. Mitchell and Johnson were second and third in the 100m dash. Mitchell finished at 10.70 and Johnson at 10.72.
Donald Romero and Justin Roberts added second and third place honors for EIU in the hammer. Romero had a distance of 188'10" while Roberts throw carried 169'4".
EIU will return to action next Friday night as a select group of athletes will compete at the Louisville Twilight looking to secure a spot for the NCAA Regional set for May 26-28 in Eugene, Oregon.
