Track Adds Two Men, Two Women To Roster
Wednesday, August 14 2013CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois track and field has added four athletes for the 2013-14 season with two joining both the men's and women's teams. EIU under the direction of head coach Tom Akers has won five straight OVC men's indoor, men's outdoor and women's outdoor championships.
Joining the Panthers for the men are Jonathan Boey and Rashad Hulbert. Brion Portis and Raven Kelly are new additions to the women's team.
Boey is the younger brother of former EIU All-American Zye Boey having prepped at MacArthur High School in Decatur. He won the Champaign Centennial Class 2A Sectional in the 100m and was second in the 200m as a senior but did not compete at the IHSA State Championships. His sectional winning time in the 100m was 10.88. His runner-up time in the 200m was 22.83. As a junior at the 2012 IHSA State Championships Boey was sixth in the 200m with a finals time of 22.59 and eighth in the 100m with a finals time of 11.04.
Hulbert is a transfer from LSU where he competed for the nationally ranked Tigers program during the 2013 indoor season competing in the 60m hurdles. He redshirted the outdoor season. He competed in high school at Crete-Monee High School where he won back-to-back IHSA Class 3A State Championships in the 300m hurdles. During his high school career he posted career bests of 7.45 in the 55m indoor hurdles, 13.99 in the 110m hurdles and 36.91 in the 300m hurdles. Hulbert competed at the 2011 USA Track & Field National Junior Olympics where he was the silver medalist in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.01.
Portis comes to EIU following a successful career in jumps at Springfield's Southeast High School. She won back-to-back state championships in the triple jump helping her school win two of its four straight IHSA Class 2A Team State Championships. She won the triple jump as a senior with a mark of 35'8” after winning the title as a junior with a mark of 39'2.50”. She advanced to the state finals in the long jump during both her junior and senior year with a sixth place finish as a junior with a mark of 17'8.50”. She was 12th as a senior with a mark of 16'11.25”.
Kelly competed at Romeoville High School where she was an IHSA Class 3A State qualifier in the shot put as a senior. Kelly placed eighth in the finals with a throw of 38'11.25”. Kelly was the winner of the Lockport Township Sectional with a throw of 40'0.50”.
