CROSS COUNTRY COMPETES FRIDAY AT ILLINOIS STATE

Eastern Illinois men's and women's cross country returns to action on Friday evening as the Panthers compete in the Country Financial Illinois State Intercollegiate.  The women's 5K race will begin at 5 p.m. followed by the men's 8K competition at 5:45 pm.  Both races will be contested on Illinois State Weibring Golf Course.
 
EIU opened the 2016 season winning both the men's and women's team titles at the EIU Walt Crawford Open.  The women scored 17 points to beat SIU Edwardsville, Southern Illinois and Evansville.  The men's point total was a little closer with the EIU men scoring 33 points followed by SIUE with 43.  Southern Illinois and Evansville placed third and fourth among NCAA Division I schools.
 
Maria Baldwin was the women's individual winner collecting her second straight EIU Walt Crawford championship.  The junior was named the Ohio Valley Conference Runner of the Week after winning the event with a time of 17:48.92.  The mark was four seconds off her personal best and set the EIU Tom Woodall Panther Trail record beating the previous time by seven seconds.  Baldwin's time is the fastest in the OVC this season by 20 seconds.
 
The Panther women had four of the top five runners cross the finish line in the Walt Crawford Open withRuth Garippo placing second, Ivy Handley fourth and Rachel Garippo fifth. Julie James was the Panthers final scored runner placing eighth.  The Panthers five scored runners and Jocelyne Mendoza (who placed 12th overall) all covered the 5K course in less than 19 minutes.
 
On the men's side EIU ran without its top preseason runner as Riley McInerney missed the meet due to illness.  Tyler Yunk stepped up for EIU finishing third in the meet with a time of 25:32.33.  The Panthers had four runners finish in the top ten in the event with Chris Orlow fifth, Paxson Menard seventh andGreg Rogers eighth.  Juan Barajas was the final EIU scored runner finishing in 11th place.
