CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois track and field returns to action this week with nine individuals and six relay teams set to compete at the Drake Relays this Thursday through Saturday. A remaining number of team members will compete on Wednesday at the Indiana State Midweek Open.
The Panthers had seven men and two women selected to compete at the 106th Drake Relays. Christian Ilunga-Matthiesen and Jamal Robinson will compete in the men's 100m dash. Ephraim Dorsey, coming off a first place showing at the Illini Twilight, will compete in the men's 800m run. Danny Trevor will compete in the 110m hurdles. Joe Calio will compete in the men's steeplechase. In field events Eric Gordon will compete in the pole vault while David Johansson will compete in the javelin. On the women's side Whitney Maninfior will compete in the 10K while Kristen Paris will compete in the unseeded open 800m run.
The Panthers will send four men's relay team and two women's relay teams to compete this weekend. The men's 4x100 relay team set a school record last weekend at the Illini Twilight finishing second with a time of 39.79. The relay team from last week included Zach Booth, Norvel Mohammed, Robinson and Ilunga-Matthiesen. EIU will also enter a 4x200, 4x400 and 1600 Sprint Relay team for the men. On the women's side EIU will have a 4x100 relay team and 4x800 relay team. The women's 4x100 relay team placed first at the Illini Twilight last week with the second best time in school history. The women's 4x100 relay team from last week included Angelica Anyaogu, Briana Walker, Darneisha Spann and Nyjah Lane.
EIU placed second in team scoring for the men and third for the women at last week's Illini Twilight. The Panthers had first place finishes by Dorsey in the men's 800m,Dhiaa Dean in the women's 400m dash and the women's 4x100 relay.
On the women's side four individuals posted top ten marks on the EIU career list. Dean's first place finish in the 400m with a time of 55.31 ranks fifth on the EIU career list. Maria Baldwin was second in the 5,000m run with a time of 17:16.90 which ranks fourth at EIU. Katie Ryan was second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.87 which ranks third at EIU. Bryn Buckwalter was second in the shot put with a throw of 45'9.75" which ranks fifth at EIU.
On the men's side Dorsey's winning time of 1:50.78 moved him into eighth on the EIU career list. Gordon cleared 16'1.25" at the Illini Twilight to move into 10th on the EIU career list.
The Indiana State Midweek Open will begin at 3 p.m. (Central) with five field events – men's hammer, women's shot put, men's long jump, men's high jump and women's pole vault. The running events will begin at 4 p.m. (Central) with the 110m hurdles.
