Wednesday, May 20 2009 - NCAA Mid East Regional Championships - Zye BoeyFreshman sprinter gears up for NCAA Regional
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Eastern Illinois freshman sprinter Zye Boey turned in one of the fastest times in Panther track history last weekend in Louisville at the Cardinal Twilight. This week that time landed him No. 10 in the nation in the 100m dash.
Boey's time of 10.20 ranks tied for second fastest in EIU history after he won at the Cardinal Twilight. Claude Magee holds the EIU school mark of 10.16 set in 1984. Boey has placed himself in some pretty hefty company near the top of the EIU record book. The man he is currently tied with - Sandy Osei-Agyeman, posted a 10.20 in 1972. Osei-Agyeman would go on to represent his native Ghana in the 1972 Munich Olympics advancing to the second round of the 100m dash prelims.
This season Boey has excelled in the 100m and 200m dash. He was named the OVC Male Track Athlete of the Year with four wins in six 100m starts. His two other finishes were second place efforts at the Memphis Invite and Drake Relays. The athletes he lost to at those two meets are teammate DeMarcus Brooks (at Memphis) and Trey Harts of Baylor (at Drake). Brooks was ranked in the Top 40 earlier this year and Harts enters the NCAA Regional season ranked 20th.
Boey is slated to compete in the 100m, 200m, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay at the NCAA Regional which will take place in Louisville on May 29-30. He will be looking to become the first Panther track athlete to advance to the NCAA National Championships since Ron White in 2002. Earlier this season Boey earned a trip to the NCAA Indoor National Championships competing in the 200m dash.
