Three Track Athletes Win OVC Weekly Awards

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Following several NCAA qualifying performances over the weekend, three Eastern Illinois track and field athletes were recognized by the Ohio Valley Conferences for their efforts at EIU’s Big Blue Classic.
Zye Boey and Violet Nwordu were named the OVC Male and Female Track athletes of the week while Ian Winston was tabbed as the OVC Male Field athlete of the week.
Boey quickly cemented himself in the EIU career record books winning the 100m and 200m sprints in his first collegiate attempt at both events. He won the 100m in a time of 10.33 which ranks fourth all-time at EIU. He followed that up with a win in the 200m at 20.92 which landed in fifth on the EIU career charts. Both marks hit the NCAA regional qualifying standard. He also ran the third leg on the EIU 4x400 relay team that placed first. The team posted the second best time in school history narrowly missing the NCAA standard with a time of 3:10.89.
Nwordu earned two first place finishes and one second place finish at the EIU Big Blue Classic. She won the 100m dash with a time of 12.05 which landed her eighth best on the EIU career list and is the top mark in the OVC this season. She also ran a leg on the winning 4x100 relay team setting a meet record at 46.49 and ranking third best in EIU history. Her final race was a second place finish in the 200m sprint at 25.07.
Winston was named the top male OVC field athlete of the week after his performance in the high jump. He passed the NCAA regional standard with a jump of 6’10.75” which is tied for third all-time at EIU. He was third in the event as all three medalists passed the NCAA standard in the event. Winston’s mark is the best in the OVC this season.
EIU returns to action this Saturday competing at the Western Illinois Lee Calhoun Classic.
