Friday, April 3 2009Pat Tortorici wins 400m hurdles for EIU
CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois track and field got off to a hot start during its lone home meet of the outdoor season as the Panthers won one individual event, one relay title and placed in the top three with seven other individuals and relays. Competition resumes on Saturday at O’Brien Field.
Pat Tortorici won the men’s 400m hurdles to give EIU its lone event individual victory crossing the finish line in 52.73. Fellow Panther Kris Gehrke placed third with a time of 53.60.
The men’s 4x800 relay team won with a time of 7:35.10 while EIU’s women’s 4x800 squad placed second at 9:29.62.
LaDonna Martin was a runner-up in the long jump with a best mark of 17’7”. She tied event winner Lita Wynne of Illinois State for best jump but Wynne hit the mark in a fewer number of jumps to earn gold medal honors.
Jenna Uhe was third in the long jump with a mark of 17’4.75”. Uhe also picked up a second place finish in the javelin as the senior finished with a throw of 125’11”.
Caitlin Finnegan rounded out the top three women’s performers with a third place in the 400m hurdles in a time of 1:04.41.
Aaron Iaun was third in the men’s steeplechase with a time of 9:39.49.
Friday also marked the end of the Neil Moore Multi’s. Sean Hopkins competing as an independent won the decathlon with 6,173 points while Morgan Schaefer of Illinois State won the heptathlon with 4,604 points.
