Track In 3rd After OVC Championships Day One

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois men's and women's track and field teams sit in third place following day one action at the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track Championships being held at Lantz Fieldhouse. Competition resumes at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Tennessee State leads the women's championship with five events scored on day one. TSU has 38 points followed by Southeast Missouri in second (34 points), Eastern Illinois in third (33 points), Murray State in fourth (28 points), Eastern Kentucky in fifth (20 points), SIU Edwardsville in sixth (18 points), Austin Peay in seventh (13 points), Belmont in eighth (7 points) and Jacksonville State in ninth (4 points). Tennessee Tech did not score.
On the men's side SEMO leads after five scored events with 50.5 points. EKU is second (42 points), EIU is third (40 points), TSU is fourth (30.5 points), Belmont is fifth (15 points) and SIU Edwardsville is sixth (14 points).
Pablo Ramirez won the men's 5K to conclude the day one events for Eastern Illinois with a time of 14:45.14. He was followed by a pair of EKU runners in second and third with Yosi Goasdoue crossing at 14:47.43 and Jeppe Harboe crossing at 14:47.67.
Britney Whitehead won the women's 5K running the in the opening heat as she just fell short of the OVC record winning with a time of 17:11.72. The OVC record is 17:11.63 held by Amy Beatty of Morehead State in 1999. Rebekah Lawson of SEMO was second at 17:28.21 and Viivi Rantanen of EKU was third at 17:40.75.
EIU and EKU raced to the finish line in the men's DMR with the Panthers Bryce Bastingedging out the Colonels Soufiane Bouchikhi for an EIU win. The Panthers had a time of 10:03.01 with EKU just behind at 10:03.05. SEMO was third at 10:08.69.
EKU won the women's DMR with a time of 12:00.38. SIUE was second at 12:05.99 and EIU third at 12:19.13.
Craig Robinson of SEMO led a one, two finish for the Redhawks in the men's weight throw. Robinson won with a mark of 64'7.25”. Kevin Farley was second with a throw of 60'1”. Jared Diaz of EIU was the bronze medalist with a throw of 58'3.25”.
Tonia Pratt of Murray State won the women's weight throw with a mark of 60'10.75”. Brittani Logan of Tennessee State was second at 60'8.50”. Kayla Gutierrez of SEMO was third at 57'5”.
TSU's Daryl Rice won the men's high jump clearing 6'9”. Zach Hill of EKU placed second at 6'7” and Reginald Miller, Jr., of SEMO was third at 6'5”.
In the women's high jump Gabrielle Todd of TSU edged Maura Cummins of EIU based on number of attempts. Both athletes cleared 5'7.25” but Todd placed first based on the procedure. Cummins placed second. Katie Forshey of MSU was third at 5'5.25”.
Blake Carter of SEMO won the men's long jump with a jump of 24'5”. Royce Dates of TSU was second at 24'2.50” and Bryce Hogan of EIU third at 23'6.75”.
Ashontae Jackson of TSU won the long jump covering 19'4.75”. SEMO's Jessica Brown was second at 18'10.50” and Jatavia Wright of SIUE third at 18'10.50” with the medals decided by number of jumps.
