EIU Women's Track Records Fall

With a long and storied program as the backdrop, two Eastern Illinois female track athletes shattered school records during the 2008 outdoor season to rank as the No. 7 moment in EIU’s Top 10 Year in Review countdown.

Juniors Kandace Arnold and Chandra Golden both rose to the challenge during some of the biggest meets of the year as each etched their name in the No. 1 spot in an event during the season.

Arnold’s heroics came in her final meet of the season as she had a record throw in the discus to place 19th at the NCAA Regional meet at the University of Arkansas. Arnold’s throw of 152’07” in the discus passed the previous mark held by Adrianna Leschewski set in 2005 at 152’. Arnold became on the second EIU female athlete to pass the 150’ mark in competition. Third place on the career Top 10 is Deanna Zeigler at 143’04”, nearly 9 feet shy of the new record.

Golden’s top mark came at the Ohio Valley Conference championships as she became just the second EIU female athlete to run a sub-14.0 in the 100 meter hurdles. Golden won the OVC championship with a school record 13.70 dusting away the previous mark set by Candy Phillips in 1998 at 13.97. Golden had run close a 14.03 earlier in the season but finally finished under the 14.0 mark for the first time in her career.
