EIU Men & Women Place Third At EIU Early Bird

EIU men's and women's indoor track recorded 14 top three finishes in their season-opening meet

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Eastern Illinois men's and women's indoor track & field teams began their 2016-17 season on Friday night with the annual EIU Early Bird Meet in the Lantz Fieldhouse. The Panthers earned a combined 14 top three finishes as both the men's and women's teams placed third overall in the meet.

Indiana State finished first overall for both the men and women. Illinois State placed second overall for both the men and women, with Western Illinois rounding out the list with a pair of fourth place finishes.

For the EIU women, Anita Saffa (7.60) and Nyjah Lane (7.61) finished in first and second respectively in the 60-meter dash. Saffa posted a time of 7.56 in the prelims which places her in second all-time in EIU history.
Julie James cruised to a second place finish in the 800-meter run as she crossed the line at 2:15.29.

In her first collegiate race, Sophia Keith placed third in the 400-meter dash with a final time of 1:00.17.

In the women's field events, Haleigh Knapp picked up right where she left off last season in the high jump as she finished the even in first place at 5'10" and currently ranks at a tie for the second-best mark in the country.

Chaela Krueger posted the best jump in the women's long jump as she cleared a distance of 5.74m.

Bryn Buckwalter earned a pair of second place finishes in the weight throw and the shotput. Buckwalter tossed a new personal record in the shotput at a distance of 49'7.75" and moves into second all-time in program history. She also set another personal record with her mark in the weight throw at 57'11.25" and moves into third all-time in EIU history.

Jamal Robinson got the running events started for the EIU men as he placed second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.83 and followed that up with another second place finish in the 200-meter dash at 22.46.

Joe Smith and Chrisford Stevens finished second and third in the men's long jump respectively. Smith posted a mark of 6.76m with Stevens finishing at 6.71m. Stevens also earned a first place finish in the triple jump as he cleared a distance of 14.48m.

Adam Kessler earned the final top three finish for the EIU men as he recorded the best throw in the shotput at 16.66m.

The Eastern Illinois men's and women's indoor track & field units will return to action following the new year as the Panthers will travel for the Illinois Winter Invite on Jan. 13-14.
