EIU Athletes Ready For NCAA Last Chance

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Fresh off sweeping the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, several Eastern Illinois athletes will look to extend their indoor seasons competing at the NCAA Last Chance meets at Arkansas and Notre Dame this weekend.
Zye Boey, David Holm, Clint Coffey and Chandra Golden will all compete in the Arkansas meet. Kandace Arnold, Shawana Smith, DeMarcus Brooks, Brenton Pegeus, Marcus Williams and Ian Winston will represent EIU at the Notre Dame meet.
Boey won the 60m and 200m dash at the OVC championships earning Male Athlete of the Championships. He is ranked nationally in both events with a 10th place ranking in the 200m and 13th place ranking the 60m. He has set the school record in both events this season as a redshirt freshman.
Holm won the 800m dash at the OVC championships and currently ranks 9th nationally in the event. He set the Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse record earlier this season and ranks second on the EIU career charts behind former NCAA national indoor champion Jim Maton.
Brooks hit the NCAA provisional mark in the 60m dash with a second place finish at the OVC Championships. He is ranked 28th nationally in the event as the EIU men fell to No. 50 in the nation after most conferences hosted indoor championships last weekend.
Williams and Winston were also event winners at last weekend’s OVC championships with Williams winning the 400m and Winston the high jump.
Arnold was a double event winner for EIU in field events at the OVC championships. She swept the weight throw and shot put as she currently holds the school record in the weight throw and ranks third all time in the shot put.
Smith captured the 200m dash at the OVC championships.
Based on performances and national rankings following this weekend’s NCAA Last Chance meets, EIU has a chance to advance athletes to the National Indoor Championships at Texas A&M.
