Records Fall At Illinois Intercollegiate

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Records fell on Saturday afternoon as the Eastern Illinois men’s and women’s track programs hosted the Illinois Intercollegiate. The EIU men won the men’s team event while the EIU women placed second as a team.
Freshman Zye Boey smashed the Eastern Illinois indoor record in the 60m dash with a winning time of 6.66. That mark is an NCAA provisional mark and ranks fourth in the nation this year. The previous school record was 6.69 held by Claude Magee (1984) and Cameron Mabry (1998). Boey also won the 200m dash with a new personal best time of 21.52 which moved up to third on the EIU career list. Teammate DeMarcus Brooks was second in the 60m and 200m dash.
Senior David Holm also hit the NCAA provisional mark winning the 800m run with a time of 1:49.60. That mark is still second on the EIU career charts behind Jim Maton (1:48.62 – 1988) but did set a new Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse record. The previous mark was held by Carl Bell of Southeast Missouri in 1984. Sean Wiggan was second in the 800m at 1:52.35 which ranks 6th best at EIU.
Other first place finishes on the men’s side included Patrick Tortorici in the 400m with a time of 51.08. EIU went 1-2-3 in the event with Brenton Pegues and Reid Basting second and third. Marcus Williams won the 600m in a time of 1:21.93. Jason Springer won the 1000m in a time of 2:31.67. Nic Atkinson rounded out the running event winners with the 3000m crown at 8:54.58.
In field events Ian Winston moved into the career top ten in the high jump with a winning leap of 6’10.25”. That mark placed him tied for seventh with Neal Trentman. Tyler Carter won the long jump with a 21’11.50” mark. EIU also won the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:18.89.
On the women’s side Kandace Arnold continued her early season domination in field events. Arnold won the weight throw and shot put for the second time this season in three outings. Her shot put distance was 46’03.50 while her winning weight throw mark was 57’02”. Nicole Walcott was second in the shot put at 42’08”.
On the track Chandra Golden was second in the 60m hurdles with a personal best of 8.56 which moved into fourth on the EIU career list. Tamika Robinson of Illinois was the event winner at 8.44.
Shawana Smith won the 200m dash for the third time this season with a time of 25.63. Freshman Erika Foltys led a 1-2-3 finish in the 800m. Foltys won the event with a mark of 2:22.63. Megan Gingerich was second followed by Caitlin Napoleoni. Napoleoni also placed second in the mile run at 5:22.01.
Meghan Carney rounded out the women’s top performers with a second place showing in the 600m at 1:38.58.
EIU returns to action next Friday and Saturday at the Notre Dame Meyo Invitational. It will be EIU first’s meet away from Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse this season.
